    By Tony Scillieri

Taylor Cucci’s two run, game tying hit in the fourth inning, followed by Maggie Hansen’s go-ahead RBI single, sends the Pequannock Girls Majors all-star team to the Mid-Atlantic finals. Pequannock finished pool play at 3-1, and will play the 4-0 Pennsylvania state champions on Friday at 3:00.

Christina Brizek pitched the complete game for Pequannock, and was challenged all day by a tight strike zone and aggressive base running from the New York team. New York jumped out with the lead in the first inning by scoring two runs on one hit and four walks. Pequannock came back in the first to cut the lead to 2-1, with a Melissa Tahan leadoff double and an RBI by Maggie Hansen.

New York added single runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-1 lead. In the second inning, Brizek, aided by a throw out by catcher Kaitlyn Dinger on a steal attempt, was able to work her way out of a bases loaded one out inning, by allowing only one run and striking out the batter for the third out. New York threatened again in the fourh inning, however a heads-up back up by Dinger on an overthrow nailed the base runner attempting to advance.

Pequannock rallied in the fourth inning, scoring four runs to take the 5-4 lead. The inning started with Dinger beating out a bobbled ball hit to the third baseman. Brizek shut down New York the rest of the way, allowing no hits and striking out four batters in the final two innings.

The Mid-Atlantic and New England finals will be played this Friday afternoon, at 3:00 and 5:30 respectively. The two winners will play for the East Region Championship on Saturday at 12:30. The consolation game will be at 10:00 on Saturday morning.

Zahner kept up the fight striking out six of the next nine batters in the next two innings.

Bottom of the sixth inning, McKenzie Kennelly had a sizzling shot over the left fielder's head for a double, but Pequannock was unable to get her to score.

After seven strong innings pitcher Michele Zahner was relieved, due to the ruling on pitching only seven innings per game. Pequannock brought in Jonnalyn McClain who struck out all three of Parsippany's batters.

Bottom of the eighth inning Parsippany had to put in a relief pitcher as well. Pequannock's Jennifer Sigler was hit by a pitch sending the winning run onto first base. Girls Majors East Region Tournament: Pequannock, New Jersey 8, Capita1 Region (West Albany) 1
    By Tony Scillieri

Today in Albany, the Pequannock girls improved their pool play record to 2-1, by defeating Capital Region. Capital Region is represented by West Albany Little League from Colonie, NY.

Kellyann McClain took the mound for Pequannock and pitched four innings of no-hit ball. McClain gave up no runs while striking out eight batters and walking four batters. Taylor Tabakman came in relief for the final two innings, giving up one run on one hit.

Pequannock’s defense again played a solid game as outfielders Bobbi Conklin and Taylor Cucci each robbed a West Albany batter of a single by throwing them out at first from right field. In addition, catcher’s Kaitlyn Dinger and Nicole Benway threw out base runners on steal attempts.

Offensively, Pequannock put eight runs on the board in the bottom first. Lead off batter Melissa Tahan started it off as she legged out a triple, hit over the left fielders head. Boys 11U Section Tournament: Sparta 10, Pequannock 9, 7 innings
    By Denis Nelson

Sparta and Pequannock slugged their way through an extra inning classic in Ramsey on Monday night with Sparta prevailing 10-9 in the bottom of the seventh inning on a walk-off, ground rule double. Sparta will play Ramsey in the loser bracket final for the right to take on North Hunterdon American in the Sectional finals.

Pequannock started as they have several times before in this all-star season. Michael Desenzo earned a walk and Tommy Crooks followed with a two-run home run to get the team out to an early 2-0 lead. It was the first of three hits on the day for Crooks.

During the course of the game Pequannock would also offensive contributions via hits or walks from Michael Desenzo, Tyler Aug, Corey Bond, Adam Curich, Dylan Steed, Dan Jachera, Dan Parotta and Anthony Dombrowski.

Sparta tied up the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first inning. The teams traded runs in the second inning to make the score 3-3. Sparta then took the lead in the top of the third on the strength of three solo home runs to move out to a 6-3 lead.

In the fourth inning Pequannock scored four runs, the last two on a Dylan Steed inside the park two run home run that settled into the right field corner that made the score 7-6. Sparta tied the game at 7-7 in the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth inning Dan Parotta hit an infield single, Anthony Dombrowski quickly and alertly hustled to second base to beat the throw and Michael Desenzo scored from third to give Pequannock an 8-7 lead.

Sparta scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game and had the bases loaded with no outs and things looked bleak. Liam Corbutt in an amazing display of mental toughness and confidence rose to the occasion. Liam got the first out by strikeout. The next batter hit a slow roller down the third base line fielded by Derek Nelson who quickly threw to catcher Tyler Aug to cut the runner down at the plate for out number two. Corbutt then went to a full count on a lefty batter who had earlier in the game hit a home run. On a great off speed pitch Corbutt got the batter swinging and the teams headed for extra innings.

Tyler Aug put Pequannock right back on top, with a blistering, no-doubt-about-it home run to left center.

During the home half of the inning Sparta used a single, hit batter and a passed ball to move the tying and go ahead runs into scoring position. With two outs, Sparta hit a walk off double to end the game and an outstanding all-star season for the Pequannock eleven-year-old boys.

Girls Majors East Region Tournament: Pequannock, New Jersey 6, Hollywood, Maryland 4
    By Tony Scillieri

The Pequannock girls evened their record today in pool play by beating Hollywood, Maryland by the score of 6-4. Pequannock is now 1-1 and are tied for second place in the Mid-Atlantic division.

It didn’t take long for the Pequannock bats to get going as they scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Melissa Tahan started the inning by hitting a sharp grounder that couldn’t be handled by the Maryland shortstop. Christina Brizek came up next and bunted her way to first giving Pequannock runners on first and third. Both Tahan and Brizek scored on RBIs from Maggie Hansen and Kaitlyn Dinger, giving Pequannock the 2-0 lead.

Christina Brizek was on the mound for Pequannock and fought through rainy conditions throughout the game. A mild threat by Maryland in the first inning was stopped when Brizek fielded a chopper in the front of the plate and then caught the runner on third in a run down. Brizek threw to Hansen who chased the runner down for the out. In the third inning, Maryland was able to scratch two runs as Brizek had trouble gripping the slippery ball and let up four base-on-balls and a hit batter. After three full innings of play, the score was tied at 2-2.

Pequannock came right back in the fourth inning scoring another run to take a 3-2 lead. Speedster Cassie Coviello had started the inning with a walk, and then advanced to second on a Bobbi Conklin infield single. After a passed ball moved the runners over to second and third base, Coviello scored on a delayed steal to give Pequannock the lead. Pequannock’s lead, however, was short-lived as Maryland tied the game in the bottom of the inning after a walk and an RBI single by the Maryland batters.

Pequannock took the lead for good in the fifth inning scoring three runs off the Maryland starter. RBI singles by Kellyann McClain and Taylor Tabakman keyed the rally. The third run was scored as Carly Hausleben took advantage of a passed ball to steal home. Maryland scored another run in the bottom of the fifht inning, however the inning was cut short as Kaitlyn Dinger threw a bullet to Tahan at second to get the Maryland base runner attempting to steal.

Brizek pitched the complete game for Pequannock, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out ten Maryland batters. Pequannock will enjoy a day off before continuing pool play on Tuesday, at 11:00 against West Albany Little League, the Capital Region representative.

Girls Majors East Region Tournament: Laurel, Delaware 5, Pequannock, New Jersey 1
    By Tony Scillieri

The Pequannock girls started pool play today in the East Region tournament in Albany. Pequannock played the state champions from Delaware and lost to them by the score of 5-1

Delaware got on the board first as they scored two runs off of three hits in the first inning. However, Pequannock pitcher Kellyann McClain came back strong in the second inning and struck out the side to keep the game at 2-0 Delaware. In the third inning, the Delaware bats got hot again and scored three more times. Two runs were scored when a batted ball from Delaware bounced off of the third base bag allowing two runs to score. The Pequannock defense helped in the inning on two key plays. First, Kaitlyn Dinger was able to turn a wild pitch into an out when a Delaware runner ttempted to score. Dinger quickly got to the ball and tossed to McClain to record the out. Then with one out and two runners on, a 4-3-2 double play ended the inning. Carly Hausleben fielded a grounder, threw to Taylor Tabakman for the first out, who then threw to Dinger who laid the tag down to complete the double play.

A Delaware threat in the fifth inning was stopped when Dinger threw out a Delaware runner attempting to steal. Shortstop Melissa Tahan applied the perfect slap tag to get the runner

The Delaware pitcher was strong as she kept the Pequannock batters hitless through four innings. Pequannock scored their lone run in the fifth inning when Cassie Coviello hit a two-out single. Tabakman then launched a double over the right fielder’s head allowing Coviello to score from first.

Bobbi Conklin who came in to relieve in the fourth pitched effectively as she was able to retire all five batters she faced. Final score was 5-1 Delaware.

Pequannock will continue their Pool Play on Sunday at 11:00 when they face Maryland. Maryland is 1-0 after defeating Capital Region earlier today. Pool play for both the Mid-Atlantic and New England divisions will continue through Wednesday. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the next round.

With a base hit by Jonnalyn McClain and a walk by Kaitlyn Natoli, Michele Zahner rips one past the right fielder for a double that scored Natoli and McClain. Taylor VanSant gets on with a base hit up the middle. Pequannock ends the first inning with a 5-0 lead.

Second inning, Hopatcong got on base by a walk and proceeded to steal second and third on passed balls. But when Hopatcong tried to take advantage and steal home on another passed ball, catcher Kaitlyn Natoli quickly tossed the ball to pitcher McClain who tagged her for the second out of the inning.

Bottom of the fourth, Carly Klimek did it again like a horse out of the gate, walked, stole second and third and home with a blink of an eye. Danielle Tahan and Natalie Trautwein both, of which were walked, were brought home by Jennifer Sigler who smoked one out past the right fielder for a clean double but took third on a bad throw from the outfield to give Pequannock a 9-0 lead. As Sigler patiently waits on third, Kaitlyn Natoli gets a base hit scoring Sigler to win the game 10-0 bottom of the fourth.

Boys 11U Sectional Tournament: Pequannock 11, Randolph East 9
    By Denis Nelson

Pequannock looked to rebound against Randolph East in the loser’s bracket on Saturday night, August 1st after suffering their first defeat of the all-star season two days earlier. Batting in the top of the first as the visiting club Pequannock get a leadoff walk from Michael Desenzo followed immediately by a two run blast from Tommy Crooks to stake the team to a 2-0 lead.

Randolph answered back in the bottom of the first inning with a long ball of their own. A three run shot with no outs gave Randolph the lead. Tommy Crooks settled down and got three outs with no further damage.

In the second inning Pequannock took the lead back starting with a leadoff walk from Adam Curich and a Dylan Steed double that missed going over the fence by inches. Michael Desenzo walked and Tommy Crooks and Anthony Dombrowski followed with back-to-back singles to drive in three runs for the inning and Pequannock lead 5-3.

Randolph responded with runs in the bottom of the inning again. They scored three runs on a bases clearing double and took a 6-5 lead into the top of the third inning.

Lou Molinari stroked a double with one out in the third inning but his teammates were unable to move him across the plate and Randolph looked to add to their 6-5 lead.

Tommy Crooks began to find his rythym on the mound and following a leadoff walk retired the next three Randolph batters setting the final two down with strikeouts.

In the top of the fourth Pequannock would take the lead back. Tommy Crooks hit a one-out double and Anthony Dombrowski reached based. Derek Nelson drove in Crooks with a fielder’s choice to the right side to tie the score. Danny Parotta then delivered a big hit again. This time a much needed two-out, two-run home run to give Pequannock an 8-6 lead.

For the first time in this game Randolph was unable to answer Pequannock runs scored with their own. Tommy Crooks faced only four batters in the inning getting a fielder’s choice, a ground out and pop out.

The Pequannock bats added to their lead in the fifth inning. David Iodice led off the inning with a single. Two outs later Michael Desenzo hit a single. For the second inning in a row Pequannock got a huge home run with two outs. Tommy Crooks hit a three run blast to stake the visitors to an 11-6 lead. Anthony Dombrowski followed with a double before the inning ended.

Crooks pitched into the fifth, finishing 4 2/3 innings of work in a gutsy performance on the mound. Tommy Ackershoek took over for the final out of the fifth inning and would show some courage of his own on the mound in the sixth.

Holding an 11-6 lead, Ackershoek got the first batter to line out to second base. A walk and a bloop singles led to a three run home run and the score was 11-9 with one out. Randolph loaded the bases on three consecutive singles before Ackershoek demonstrated a closer’s mentality and took over and shut down Randolph with a strikeout and roller back to the mound to finish the game, much to the delight of the many Pequannock fans in attendance.

The team will next take on Sparta on Monday, August 3rd at Ramsey at 8 pm.

Boys 11U Section Tournament: North Hunterdon American 10, Pequannock 1
    By Denis Nelson

Pequannock faced North Hunterdon American (NHLL) at Ramsey’s McFarran Field in the first round of the Sectional tournament on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. The team once again played the role of visitors and batted first. Things started off well with Michael Desenzo reaching on a bunt and Tommy Crooks singling to left field. Unfortunately the team ran into some problems on the base paths and came out of the inning with no runs.

Corey Bond started on the hill for Pequannock and pitched a flawless first inning. Three up, three down, including a strikeout to end the inning with only 11 pitches thrown.

The Pequannock batters continued putting the ball in play but North Hunterdon kept making plays and the timely situational hitting that Pequannock executed in the District tournament was lacking this night. North Hunterdon was extremely tough with two strikes and used the long ball, three home runs to score 10 runs over the next four innings as Pequannock used four pitchers in all.

Dylan Steed scored Pequannock’s lone run as a special pinch runner when he stole home on a passed ball. Tommy Crooks was 2-for-3 including a double. Tyler Aug reached base three times and Tommy Ackershoek, and Danny Parotta contributed base hits.

The team next takes on Randolph East on Friday, July 31st at Ramsey at 8:00 p.m.

Girls Majors State Tournament: Pequannock 3, Robbinsville 2, State Champions!
    By Tony Scillieri
The Girls Majors all-stars captured the New Jersey State Championship by defeating Robbinsville 3-2. The Pequannock offense, backed by the loud crowd, struck early and fast by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.
The inning started when leadoff hitter Melissa Tahan got on base after hitting a hard single to left field. Christina Brizek followed Tahan and got on base by beating out a bunt. Tahan scored the first run of the game after the Robbinsville third baseman had trouble fielding a groundball hit by Maggie Hansen. Pequannock’s four and five batters, Kaitlyn Dinger and Kellyann McClain, came through delivering RBI’s to give Pequannock the 3-0 lead.
The Pequannock bats remained quiet for the rest of the game, and left it up to pitcher Christina Brizek and the defense to hold the Robbinsville offense. Two Robbinsville threats were thwarted by brilliant plays from the Pequannock left fielders. The first one came in the second inning, when Carly Hausleben dove and caught a hard line drive hit into the left-center gap. In the next inning, Cassie Coviello made a diving shoe-string catch on a sinking ball hit into shallow left field.
Inspired by the early lead and the play of her defense, Christina Brizek held the potent batters from Robbinsville to two runs on four hits and two walks. Robbinsville score single runs in both the second and fifth innings. As the game became tighter, Brizek became stronger and recorded five strikeouts for the last six outs of the game.
With the last out made, the Pequannock players, coaches and fans celebrated the victory on the field. The girls will now represent the state of New Jersey in the Regional Tournament held in Albany, NY. The tournament begins Saturday, August 1st. Pequannock will be playing Capital Region at 12:00.

The New Jersey State Champions are Nicole Benway, Christina Brizek, Bobbi Conklin, Cassie Coviello, Taylor Cucci, Kaitlyn Dinger, Maggie Hansen, Carly Hausleben, Kellyann McClain, Dana Scillieri, Taylor Tabakman, and Melissa Tahan.

Girls 11U District Tournament: Pequannock 11, Tri-Boro 3, District Champs!

Boys 11U District Tournament: Pequannock 11, West Milford 1, 4 innings, District Champs
    By Denis Nelson

    DISTRICT CHAMPIONS

Pequannock and West Milford squared off in the District 2 finals on Sunday at Hillcrest Field in West Milford. Pequannock again embraced the role of visitors and the hit first, score first mentality that had served them so well in the first three games of the tournament. After a spectacular play by the West Milford second baseman on a well hit ball by Michael Desenzo that resulted in an out, Tommy Crooks and Anthony Dombrowski earned back-to-back walks. The shortstop then mishandled Tyler Aug’s grounder and the first run of the game was in. Danny Parotta then hit another up the middle single with men on base and two more runs scored. The third basemen had difficulty with Adam Curich’s ground ball and Parotta scored to make it 4-0 Pequannock heading to the bottom of the first. In four District tournament games Pequannock scored a total of 15 first inning runs and never trailed in a game.

Corey Bond took the mound for Pequannock to start the game. After recording a ground ball out, the second batter hit a shot down the right field line that look destined for extra bases. Right fielder Dan Jachera cut the ball off, turned and fired a strike to Adam Curich who relayed to shortstop Michael Desenzo waiting at second base, the tag was applied and Pequannock had the second out of the inning on stellar defensive team play. Bond got the last batter to bounce harmlessly to him at the mound for the third out.

In the top of the second inning the Pequannock bats went back to work. Corey Bond and Michael Desenzo started with back to back infield singles. Tommy Crooks hit a single to score Bond. Anthony Dombrowski bounced a double down the third base line that scored Desenzo. Danny Parotta deliverd another RBI single that scored Crooks. Dan Jachera then did some damage with his bat after inflicting some with his arm. Jachera hit a single up the middle to score Dombrowski and Parotta who had stolen second base. Pequannock led 9-0 entering the bottom of the second inning.

West Milford led off the inning with a solo home run. Corey Bond responded nicely getting two ground outs and his first strikeout to stifle any thoughts of a West Milford rally.

For the second inning in a row Corey Bond helped his own cause by getting on base, this time with a walk. Bond would come around to score courtesy of two West Milford errors to make the score 10-1 with two outs and runners on second and third. The field was then cleared due to the threat of thunderstorms and lightning in the vicinity. A wicked storm ensued shortly after and the game was delayed for two hours. When played resumed West Milford committed another error allowing Lou Molinari to score.

Corey Bond kept at it on the mound with an 11-1 lead pitching efficiently, throwing strikes and letting his defense make plays. The third inning was typical for Bond, two ground outs and a strikeout.

Derek Nelson led off the fourth inning with a single and Bond was on base for a third time thanks to his second walk, however Pequannock was held score less in the inning. That broke a streak of nine consecutive innings of at least one run scored in each inning spanning three different games.

In the bottom of the fourth with a ten run lead and a chance to end the game, Corey Bond took advantage. He got the leadoff batter to ground out to short. After a walk and a single, Bond retired the final two batters by strike out and Pequannock captured the District title in West Milford. For the day Bond allowed four hits, one run, struck out four, walked two and got seven ground ball outs, going the distance for the second time in the tournament.

Pequannock scored 48 runs in four games allowing only 8 for an average score of 12-2. Three games ended early as a result of the 10-run rule. The District 2 champs will begin play in the Sectionals on Thursday, July 30th at 8:00 p.m. in Ramsey against North Hunterdon American.

Girls Majors State Tournament: Pequannock 3, Robbinsville 0
    By Tony Scillieri

Strong pitching, clutch hitting, and solid defense has been the formula to Pequannock’s success this year. This was no exception today in Allentown-Upper Freehold, as Pequannock beat a strong Robbinsville team by the score of 3–0.
Christina Brizek was brilliant on the mound, holding the powerful Robbinsville lineup to no runs, while giving up only four hits and one walk. Brizek was successful by getting ahead early in the count and forcing the batters to hit into twelve ground ball outs. Pequannock’s defense was stellar in making play after play without committing an error.
After a scoreless first inning, Pequannock was able to score two runs in the top of the second inning. Kellyann McClain got things going with a base hit to right field. McClain moved to second base on well executed sacrifice bunt from Carly Hausleben. Taylor Tabakman then followed with a single, setting up the hit of the game for Bobbi Conklin. With a 3-2 count, Conklin hit a single scoring Cassie Coviello, who was pitch-running for McClain. Tabakman scored during the same play as an errant throw from the Robbinsville fielder allowed the runners to advance.
Pequannock scored their third and final run in the top of the sixth inning. Melissa Tahan led off the inning with a single, and was then sacrificed to second by Brizek. Tahan scored after Kaitlyn Dinger hit a hard single to the outfield and an overthrow from the Robbinsville fielder.
Overall a solid game was played by all the Pequannock players. Maggie Hansen led the defense with five plays from third base. Nicole Benway, Dana Scillieri, and Taylor Cucci also contributed defensively to preserve the shutout for Pequannock.
Pequannock now advances to the States finals on Monday July 27th, at 5:30. They will play the winner of the Robbinsville vs. Hammonton game. All games are played in Allentown-Upper Freehold. Please visit http://www.njdistrict12.org/ or http://www.aufll.org/ for directions.

    Boys 11U District Tournament: Pequannock 12, Tri-Boro 2
    By Denis Nelson

For the second straight game Pequannock wasted no time getting on the board as the visitors in the top of the first inning. Michael Desenzo started the game with an infield single. Tommy Crooks continued his hot hitting from game one and lofted an opposite field double. Anthony Dombrowski plated both teammates with a double of his own to make the score 2-0.
Cory Bond started on the mound for Pequannock. Anthony Dombrowski made a beautiful diving catch of a foul ball near the fence from his third base spot. Tri-Boro scratched out a run in the bottom of the first inning which ended with Bond throwing to shortstop Michael Desenzo on a heads-up cutoff play to get the final out at second base.
Pequannock got the run back in the top of the second inning. Tommy Ackershoek led off the inning with a walk. David Iodice laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move Ackershoek to second base. Ackershoek later scored on a hard hit ball by Cory Bond to make the score 3-1.
Tri-Boro led off the home half of the second inning with a single. That base runner was erased on a fielder’s choice that saw nice plays on both ends by Michael Desenzo at short and Derek Nelson at second base. Tyler Aug threw out the next hitter at first base on a squib hit in front of the plate and Bond got the last batter to end the scoreless inning.
Pequannock went scoreless in the top of the third despite a single by Lou Molinari.
Tri-Boro looked to make a game of it with back-to-back singles to start the bottom half of the third inning and plated their second run of the game on a fielder’s choice to make the score 3-2.
In the top of the fourth Pequannock added to their lead. Adam Curich drew a one out walk to get things going. Cory Bond followed with a hit and Liam Corbutt drove in Curich with a shot over the left fielder for a double. Tommy Crooks hit a single to drive in Bond. With two outs, Anthony Dombrowski hit a devastating three run home run, his second home run of the tournament that staked Pequannock to an 8-2 lead. Danny Parotta followed that with a single and was called out at second to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Derek Nelson made a tough defensive play at second base on a wicked bad hop to get the first out of the inning. Tommy Crooks then flipped to Nelson cover first base for the next out and Michael Desenzo recorded the final out of the inning that saw Cory Bond throw only five pitches.
The Pequannock bats went back to work and scored four more runs to make the score 12-2. Dan Jachera and Adam Curich hit singles sandwiched around an out. Anthony Dombrowski drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to left field after four consecutive walks.
Cory Bond finished recorded his first strikeout of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, and induced his tenth and eleventh ground ball outs. In Bond’s complete game victory, he threw only 57 pitches and threw first pitch strikes to 17 of 22 batters faced. He allowed only four hits in a five inning game stopped by the 10-run rule.
